Even without their chosen wedding flowers, Amy and Tyler still managed to have a wedding that hit all the right notes in Astoria, Oregon at The Loft at the Red Building!

As a Portland wedding photographer I’ve seen it all at weddings! Couples who are calm and almost zen-like, stressed, and everything in between. I’ve curated a list of tips and things to keep in mind to help you keep it all in check and be sure you have the best wedding day possible without letting petty things bother you.

Everyone dreams of a wedding day with no hiccups, setbacks or stress. Which is why the reality can sometimes be a let down. But don’t despair! With my years of experience shooting weddings, I know my way around stressful days. So repeat after me: Calm, serene, peaceful…calm, serene, peaceful…

Sometimes at the Pacific Northwest weddings it rains (shocker!!) when we really want the sun. Sometimes the florist brings the wrong color flowers. And sometimes your flower girl just doesn’t want to be sweet and instead wants to test out her lungs in the form of an epic tantrum.

Meghan and Ryan embraced sweltering heat and power outages at their Ohana Barn wedding in Corvallis, Oregon. But it didn’t phase them! They knew exactly what their day was about: love, commitment, and marriage.

So, what are you supposed to do?

Here are my best tips:

• Keep it in Perspective! The flower girl screaming is going to make a hilarious story when she’s 17 and trying to be the coolest kid ever. And, really, orange flowers instead of yellow won’t ruin your entire day. You’re there to get married, to have a great party, and commit to your best friend. Remember to take a deep breath and focus on the actual priorities of the day.

• Have A Plan! Make sure you know who’s supposed to where and when. Oh! And make sure they know where they’re supposed to be and when. It’s easier to redirect one person than it is to try and herd a whole group! Better yet, make sure your photographer has worked a solid plan out for you, knows the schedule, and is able to help you stick to it.

• Keep Calm and…Delegate! Don’t try to do it all. You and your love are beautifully dressed and ready to have that calm, serene, and peaceful day we just discussed. In the words of Taylor Swift: shake it off…and delegate! Your wedding party is there to support you in your quest to have the best wedding day ever, use that support and love.

Mallori and Tyler had a very windy and foggy wedding on the beach in Rockaway Beach, Oregon. It wasn’t exactly the ideal condition but the result was beautiful soft skies and an album filled with moments that highlighted their emotion and love.

With their seven children combined, the officiant and myself as a witness Regan and Kelly were married on the Oregon Coast not too far from Astoria, Oregon. The weather this year has been much cooler and wetter than usual and made it a challenge to get many photos of them on the beach before their ceremony. By ceremony time the sun was out and we were able to get some gorgeous photos of them on the beach together after they said their “I do’s”.

Sometimes you just gotta cut loose and have some fun at a wedding! I photographed these guys at what was supposed to be a beach wedding in Seaside, but ended up getting rained out. Fortunately, we were able to photograph all of their photos indoors at the Best Western Ocean View in Seaside where they held their reception. I love being able to capture fun and happy moments in between the formal portraits. It’s a good thing they could get their wiggles out before the ceremony!

“April showers bring May flowers”, they say. In Oregon sometimes it’s more like “May showers bring June flowers” like with Shaanti and Eire’s wedding at The Foundry at Oswego Pointe in Lake Oswego, Oregon last May. Despite the rain they had a beautiful wedding with lots of color, and the MOST tasty wedding food I’ve ever had! They served brunch for dinner by Pearl Catering, and it was delicious! They even had an crêpe making action station and homemade donuts. Yumm! When you photographing weddings as a career you eat a lot of wedding food. Let me tell you I’ve had some not so great and some really, really great wedding food, and this was one of my all time favorites! When we sit down to eat (if we even get a chance too!) good food can give us photographers the boost we need to get back to capturing our couple’s day. I think it’s safe to say we photographers adore our clients who serve quality and delightful food at their wedding!

Rain didn’t stop us from heading over to nearby Foothills Park for Shaanti and Eire’s first look and fun bridal party portraits. There is a really neat white awning over a platform that overlooks the Willamette River at the park. It was the perfect place to allow us to stay dry and still be able to photograph them and their bridal party outdoors. Perfect!

Twinkle lights are a fantastic addition to any wedding and us photographers love it when we get them in between our lens and our subject. This wedding in Vernonia, Oregon was on a beautiful private residence full of lush greenery and tall trees. The twinkle lights were like the icing on the cake to an already perfect setting and kept the party illuminated throughout the night for their reception.

Fog can be a beautiful thing. Typically when you think of Cannon Beach you imagine the picturesque and massive Haystack Rock in the background. The weather had different plans for this couple on their wedding day! The fog gave their portraits a clean softness that couldn’t be captured without it.

The Oregon Coast weather can be so unpredictable. Choosing a photographer to photograph your Oregon Coast wedding who knows how to handle a multitude of lighting situations is critical to the outcome of your wedding photos. On the Oregon Coast there are often zero trees to hide under in the shade where the light can be softer and easier to photograph portraits. This wedding wedding took place in Newport at South Beach State Park on a bright and beautiful sunny day. Knowing how to position the bride and groom in flattering light was key to getting these beautiful photographs of them in bright midday sun.

This stunning couple was recently married at Star Attractions and Events in Sweet Home, Oregon and I had the absolute pleasure of photographing it. I love it when a bride has a train on her dress she can twirl and swing as she’s dancing with her groom. The field with tall weeds on the venue’s property provided the perfect framing to capture this photograph.
