#1: Do you like them as a person?

In order to walk away with pictures that will trigger good memories, you need to have a good time taking them! You need to be comfortable with your photographer, and enjoy being around them.

#2: Does their work make your heart happy?

Make sure to look at your photographer’s portfolio. Do you like their work? All of it? If some of it sits the wrong way with you, that is a huge red flag that you might be hiring the wrong photographer. You should love everything they put out! That is the only way to feel confident that you will love the work they do for you, too.

#3: How much is this worth to you?

Just like with most things, the more you pay for family pictures the more you will get out of them. Are you wondering why some photographers charge a lot more than others? It’s usually for two reasons. First, they have enough experience to know that they can deliver on their promise. Second, they are running a legitimate business and doing things by the book, so they have calculated what they need to charge to pay their business expenses.

Black and white photo of a newborn sleeping on his tummy with a blanket and mom

This image of mom’s hand on her baby’s back has a calm feeling of connection. Because of the non-traditional angle, the focus of the image is really on their relationship more than it is on either mom or baby.

So you have a baby at home…awesome!

You may have just realized that you desperately want to share this new baby with the world but you can’t seem to get a good picture of them. What gives? You obviously SEE how beautiful your baby is. In fact, it’s almost impossible to get over the feeling of awe you feel. So why don’t any of your pictures seem to come close?

Don’t worry, it isn’t just you! Most people are no good at taking pictures of babies. And it isn’t necessarily because it’s super hard to do it – it’s that we are not used to doing it. With a few simple things in mind, you can dramatically improve the photos you take of your baby.

  1. Find good light
  2. Get the angle right
  3. Think about the story you’re telling
  4. Make sure there’s nothing crazy in the background

Sound too good to be true?

happy mom and two kids playing on a see-saw in the park Do you feel like it’s too late to start taking family pictures?

Many of us struggle with this idea of it being too late to start something. Too late to learn something new, or start a project, or write a journal, or make a new tradition.

For me, I think this ties into a sort of “perfectionism” – wanting to get it “right” from the start.

The thing with life is, though, that there’s never a clear start. When does your family story begin? When you’re a child and dream of having a family? When you are pregnant or exploring? When your first child comes home?

Your story starts now. It always has.

Awesome joy-filled "maternity" photo of family, dad is holding their toddler son upside down and pregnant mom is laughing.

And how to make sure you love them.

1. Your body is amazing!

You may be one of the lucky ones who loves being pregnant! You might be sick every day. Being pregnant might be everything you dreamed of, or it may not be what you expected at all… No matter your path, trust me. This is guaranteed to be something worth looking back on.

2. You can never get to go back.

Whether you love being pregnant or not, it is a major (and temporary) change in your life!  Humans remember things they focus on, and forget (or don’t even notice) the rest. Photos give you a way to look at your life through new eyes. They give you a way to keep connecting with the moment.

3. Do it for your child.

These memories belong to all the people who love you, not just to you. The more time passes the more you will want to share this journey. With your partner, and especially with your children. As time passes, you will meet new friends you meet down the road who didn’t know you while you were pregnant. You never know when you’ll want to (or be asked to) share these remarkable memories.

4. This is your life.

This is about capturing who you are right now. It’s about you as a whole person. It is about more than just the shape of your belly. It’s about your life changing in an unimaginably big way. It’s about remembering a time, just like any other, that is impermanent. It’s about who you were before, and it’s about who you are becoming. It’s about your joy. So when you approach maternity pictures keep that in mind, and make the pictures about more than just how your body looks during pregnancy. Make it about your relationships and the activities you love. Make it about the funny foods you enjoy, or the odd exercises you’ve taken up. Make it about you.

5. Sharing your story is fun.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again.

You don’t have to take pictures of your pregnancy.
You get to take pictures of your pregnancy!

And I’m here to help you do it right.

Pregnant mom, husband, and son race each other down the sidewalk

Maternity photos are all about celebrating how amazing your body is! They should express your spirit. They shouldn’t be awkward, posed, or done in a studio. The whole point of lifestyle photography is to see people in context. Families play together, people love each other, and life never stands still. That’s why I love this pregnant mom running a race with her toddler and husband! It’s the life they live every day, and it’s beautiful.

This is a spread from the book Serravision Photography made for her son

How a professional lifestyle family photographer documents her son’s first year of life.

Monthly baby photos for the baby’s first year are part of our fabric these days. If you are on social media, you’ve seen them. If you have a baby, BOY have you seen them! People desperately want to hold onto these times. They want to remember the small details. They want to see the changes from month-to-month. They want to see how quickly their child changed.

As a lifestyle family photographer, I got to see all of this first hand when I had my first baby. And here’s what I believe about what is truly important to capture when documenting baby’s first year….

Lifestyle family photography is all about everyday situations. When toddlers are involved, and you’re walking through the Hawthorne district, that could mean just about anything. I love how his “ride bikes” hoodie and orange pants perfectly match this alley. That’s just how cool real life can be. And my job is to turn it into a story. My job is to make art out of the everyday moments.

Sometimes people ask if it’s ok if Grandma, Cousin, Aunt, Friend, Dog, etc is in the pictures. Although I understand where it comes from, I am still surprised that I’m being asked. I’m excited that  they’re coming! It’s your playdate, and you want them to be a part of it.

Not every photographer sees things this way. Don’t ask me why not!

My belief? This is your life. Isn’t it beautiful?

newborn baby sleeping swaddled in a muslin blanket on the couch, clutter on the table and all captured in this image I begin all of my client relationships by learning, “Who is this person?”. What are we taking pictures of? What is the story we are telling together?

Life is a collection of stories, and you are about to tell one of them. What defines it?

Curious what I mean? I wrote more on my home blog: http://serravision.com/story-is-what-makes-your-photos-mean-something/

Photograph of 2-year-old toddler being hugged by his mom and dad with a really authentic smile on his face How do you go from “Can’t you just sit still for just one second so I can take a picture!?” to “I love working with toddlers.”?

It took me 10 years to uncover the secrets. Now that I know these secrets, toddlers are some of my very favorite people to work with, and here’s why:

The fact that they haven’t spent a lot of time in the world of “knowing” means they are free to be authentic. As long as they feel safe, they try new things, dance in public, climb the highest pile of rocks, carefully assemble their favorite toys with full focus, look at things from all kinds of perspectives, laugh with abandon, and cry without shame. And it isn’t my job to think of any of the “poses”. What a relief! You mean – I get to be myself, too??

Want to learn the secrets to making this change in your life? Read the original blog post, Why Toddlers Are My Favorite Photo Subjects, to see how I had to change my approach—and how you can, too.

lifestyle photography captures pictures of a little boy and his family taking a walk outside

A great joy of my work is seeing the moments that really define a person at a single moment in time. Those moments are not always still, or smiley, or head to toe. They don’t even necessarily include the person’s face.

This little guy is at that age where he is really starting to explore his independence and, at the same time, he depends so strongly on his family. His life is full of joy, exploration, and a little uncertainty.

photo of mom and son playing together on a hay ride The beauty is in the details. It is the raggedy blanket. It is the toddler who insists on wearing boots and no pants. It is the way the light comes in through your kitchen window in the afternoon. It is the looks you share with those you love.

What would you give to have a photo like this one of you and your mother? This is the gift you are giving yourself and your family when you choose lifestyle family photography. The joy is so real in this beautiful image that will be remembered for generations.

I want you to look back decades from now and say “YES! That’s exactly what our life looked like. Wasn’t it beautiful?”

When I agree to photograph a family, my goal is to go in and win their trust. As a friend and participant in the play date, I am able to capture true, intimate moments that wouldn’t necessarily be available during a traditional photo session.

This image melts my heart every time, and when the family looks back at it many years down the road, they will be able to see life as it really was. They will be able to say, “Life wasn’t always easy, but we loved each other through it all. Wasn’t it beautiful?”

Part of being a lifestyle family photographer, for me, is taking lifestyle photos of my own son in his natural environment. So when I signed him up for a baby sign language class I asked the instructor if she would like me to share photos of the class with her.

She agreed, but I don’t think she really knew what I was suggesting.

When she saw the photos, she was surprised that she actually liked them!

She said “I never like candid photos of myself but these are beautiful!”

I love being able to share the beauty that I see in others with them. It isn’t fake or staged – it is real. And our own beauty, even when it is obvious to everyone around us, is often what is hardest for us to see in ourselves.

Helping people to see the joy in their everyday life is what my lifestyle photography is about.

When you look at pictures of your family, what do you see? Do you see your kids playing and being themselves? Do you see your family the way you see it every day? Or do you see posed images that show little more than the physical attributes of each person? What is valuable to you, in the end? What conversations do you want to have with your kiddos when they bring home their collage sweetheart and you are looking back at old photos through new eyes?

When is the last time you stopped and took the time to really see the beauty and wonder in your life?

We’re so busy thinking about what’s next that we often forget to see the joy that is right here in front of us.

By taking the time to photograph the little things, not only are you encouraged to step into your life and see the beauty as you live it, but you’re able to live it again whenever you want. And that is beautiful.

Here is me practicing what I preach:  “Moms – Get in the picture!

It might sound silly, but the number one issue most of us have, especially moms, is that we take tons of pictures of the people and things happening around us. But when we look back at the photos later we feel invisible… and when our kids look back at the photos they have nothing to remind them of the relationship they had with one of the most important people in their lives – their mom!

I don’t know about you, but the images that mean the most to me from my childhood tend to include the people who were the most important to me. I can describe these images to you without even thinking… the one where my dad was carrying me out of the ocean when I was 3… the one where my mom was looking back at me in a frame pack and we were grinning at each other when I was just a baby.

There are tons of photos of me alone as a baby and kid, and they are great to have, but the ones that show the relationships with those who loved me are the ones that mean the most – that I carry in my memory.
